Inorganic Nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed on snow samples taken from two snow pits near the long-term acrtic LTER mesic acidic tussock experimental plots Toolik Field Station 2003

Abstract:

Inorganic Nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed on snow samples taken from two snow pits near the long-term acrtic LTER mesic acidic tussock experimental plots. The snow layers in each pit were described and sampled separtely with the help of Matthrew Sturm.

Methods:

Two snow pits were dug 20 meters south of moist acidic tussock experimental plots block 3. For each pit the snow layers were described, density measured and sampled using Matthew Sturm's sampler and portable balance. The sampler was 3x6x5.5 cm. and 6 samples per layer were combined for later analysis. The samples were shipped back to Woods Hole where they were thawed and NH4-N, NO3-N and PO4-P were determined using a RFA Alpkem auto-annalyzer.

For precipitation events that occurred after 27Apr2003 and before setting up of precipitaion collectors for nutrient analysis, the amount of nutrients were estimated based on a volume weighed average of the concentrations in the layers of the two snow pits.

For Archival Use:
Version 3: Update LTERNET Data Access server proxy link for Excel and comma delimited data files. Changed from knb to das in url.
Version 4: Updated metadata form to newer version (without site sheet). Updated units to current standards. Missing values changed to #N/A. Fixed discrepency with header variables. CH 25Jan2013. Updated to newer metadata with site sheet. CH March 2013.
Version 5: Changed Distrubution URL since the LTER network DAS system is being discontinued. JimL 9Apr2015
