Leave growth of Eriophorum angustifolium and Carex rotundata was measured in a long-term experimental wet sedge tundra site, Arctic LTER 1996, Toolik Lake, AK.

Abstract:

Leave growth of Eriophorum angustifolium and Carex rotundata was measured in a long-term experimental wet sedge tundra site near Toolik Lake, AK. Experimental treatments at each site included factorial NxP, greenhouse and shadehouse and were begun in 1989 (Toolik sites).

Methods:

Plots were setup as indicated below, with annual fertilization treatments of 10 g/m2 Nitrogen (as NH4NO3) and 5 g/m2 Phosphorous (as triple superphosphate) . Greenhouses and shadehouses were annually set up in late May or early June and removed in the end of August or early September.
Sites: Block 1 - Toolik Inlet (CT, N, P, NP, GH, GHNP, and Shade treatments)
Indicated as "Block 1"
Treatments began summer of 1989; one 5x10m
plot/treatment
Block 2 - Toolik Outlet (Same treatments)
"Block 2"

Notes: When measurements stopped due to tiller death or herbivory are marked with #N/A. Where cells where there are no values zeros are used. In cases where the total leaf length was unknown because of broken leaf tips the longest previous leaf length was used. In most cases these leaves had stopped growing.

Sampling Description.

Five individuals of each species in the control (CT), nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization (NP), greenhouse (GH), and greenhouse with nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization(GHNP) were randomly selected at each block. The tillers were tagged and labeled, with individuals numbered 1-5 at Block 1 and those number 6-10 at Block 2 The older leaves that had no visible green tissue were clipped at the base to equal lengths. The clipped leaves were used as the 0 point to measure the total length and green length of all of the remaining leaves. These measurements were taken every 10-12 days, with broken leaves, herbivory, and flower exertion noted.
(12) CALCULATIONS
All measurements are expressed in centimeters.
TTL was determined by adding together the total leaf lengths of all leaves at each survey date.
TGL was determined by adding together the green leaf lengths of all leaves at each survey date.
TSL was calculated by subtracting TTL from TGL.
