Extractable NH4-N and NO3-N (2 N KCl), PO4-P (0.025 N HCl) and pH (0.01 M CaCl2) were measured on soils from a transect along the Dalton road, Arctic LTER 1991.

Abstract:

Extractable NH4-N and NO3-N (2 N KCl), PO4-P
(0.025 N HCl) and pH (0.01 M CaCl2) were measured on soils from a
transect along the Dalton road. Sites are Gus Shaver flowering sites and
Arctic LTER sites.

Methods:

Cores from along the Dalton Highway
at site used by Gus Shaver for his flowering sites(see Shaver, G.R., et
al, 1986) were taken for extractions. Cores 5.46 cm in diameter were
taken to the frozen layer. Organic and mineral layers were separated and
measured in the lab. Most live plants material was removed before
extraction. For extractable NH4-N and NO3-N, 100 mls of KCl (2 N KCl)
was added to about 20 grams wet weight of homogenized soil. For PO4-P
100 mls of 0.025 N HCl was added to about 20 grams wet weight of
homogenized soil. KCl extracts were shaken for 4 hours while HCl
extracts were shaken for only 5 minutes. All extracts were immediately
filtered through Whatman No. 42 filter paper and anlyzed on a Technicon
AAII. To measure pH, 5 grams of soil in 25 mls of 0.01 M CaCl2 was used.
A subsample of soil was dryed at 50 degree C and used to convert the wet
weights to oven dry weights.

Notes: The Sag tussock cores were not measured. An
average bulk density from soils extracted in 1992 and 1993 from the same
plots was used.
